Here are some of our favorite Lincoln quotes in honor of the birthday of this great leader:

Upon signing the Emancipation Proclamation on Jan. 1, 1863: “I never in my life, felt more certain that I was doing right than I do in signing this paper.... If my name ever goes into history, it will be for this act, and my whole soul is in it.”
Included in a letter to Isham Reavis dated Nov. 5, 1855: “Always bear in mind that your own resolution to succeed is more important than any other one thing.”
Abraham Lincoln-Hannibal Hamlin campaign button for 1860 presidential election After being elected president in 1860: “In all our rejoicing let us neither express, nor cherish, any harsh feeling towards any citizen who, by his vote, has differed with us. Let us at all times remember that all American citizens are brothers of a common country and should dwell together in the bonds of fraternal feeling.”
During the Lincoln-Douglas debate for a Senate seat in Galesburg, Illinois (Oct. 7, 1858): “This slavery question has been the only one that has ever endangered our Republican institutions — the only one that has ever threatened or menaced a dissolution of the Union — that has ever disturbed us in such a way as to make us fear for the perpetuity of our liberty.”
After a serenade celebrating his re-election to the presidency on Nov. 10, 1864: “Gold is good in its place; but living, brave, patriotic men, are better than gold.”
During his second inaugural address on March 4, 1865, with plans to start healing the nation after the Civil War: “With malice toward none, with charity for all, with firmness in the right as God gives us to see the right, let us strive on to finish the work we are in, to bind up the nation’s wounds.”
